After the battle of Hunain, all the booties was distributed by Rasulullah (SAW)
to others except the people of Ansar (those who helped Rasulullah and his
companions in migration from Mecca to Medina).
The Ansar felt a little pinch in their heart, and Sa'ad bin 'Ubadah (RA)
informed Rasulullah (SAW) about this. He (SAW) asked Sa'ad about
his opinion about the matter. He answered: "I also agree with my
community."
Rasulullah (SAW) then asked Sa'ad to gather his people. When all
the people were collected, Rasulullah went to them. After he praised
Allah, he addressed them, by saying:
"Some news about you has reached me, and you have some pinch
about me in your hearts.
Is it not true when I came to you, you had lost your way,
and Allah showed you the path of guidance through me;
you were poor and paupers, and Allah made you sufficient;
you were enemies of each other, and Allah caused your hearts
to be united?"
The people replied: "Why not, O Rasulullah, we are very obliged to
Allah and His Messenger."
Then he (SAW) asked: "O people of Ansar! Will you not answer my
question?"
They replied: "What reply can we give, O Rasulullah?"
The he (SAW) said:
"By Allah, if you want, you can say: 'O Muhammad, you were
helpless, and we helped you; you were made to flee, and we
gave you shelter. You were worried and sad, and we comforted
you'.
O people of Ansar! You were displeased with me for a little
wealth of the world, that with the help of that wealth I have
pleased the hearts of some the new Muslims, and I considered
your religion sufficient for you.
O people of Ansar! Are you not agreeable that the people
should take away with them camels and goats, and you should
return to your homes with the messenger of Allah?
By Him in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, if there were
no migration, I would have been an individual of Ansar, if
the people walked in one valley and the Ansar in another
valley, then I would have walked in the valley of Ansar.
O Allah..! Have mercy on Ansar, have mercy on their children,
have mercy on their grandchildren!"
The people cried till their beard were wet with the tears, and
they shouted: "We are pleased with the distribution of Rasulullah!"
